Academy MEMBER CLAIRE BUDA
SUMMER FORENSIC SCIENCE INTERNSHIP

"My name is Claire Buda and I am a senior at Crescenta Valley High School. Over summer, I was chosen to partake in a forensic science internship that I applied to at Glendale Police Department. It lasted for six weeks, encapsulating both the laboratory and crime scene aspects of the forensics field. In the laboratory, I learned how biotechnology tools such as PCR and electropherogram are used to process DNA and tie suspects to a crime. I also dusted for fingerprints on evidence items such as cans and guns inside the lab, and learned how to spot patterns that distinguish one fingerprint from another. Additionally, I observed the scene of a burglary and helped to take photos of the scene, collect DNA and fingerprints, and document information from the victim and detectives at the scene. Here, I learned how evidence can tell a story– blood spatter, broken glass, or placement of a gun can all aid in catching a criminal. Finally, I learned the importance of forensics work in that it protects those who are innocent and incriminates those who are guilty, keeping the general public safe. This internship was an exciting opportunity as I was surrounded by experts passionate about their field, and my love and respect for forensic science has grown immensely."

REGENERON ISEF
mAY 15-19, 2023
DALLAS, TX

Academy Junior Mahesh Arunachalam participated at the
REGENERON International Science and Engineering Fair
held in Dallas, Texas
I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to attend the renowned International Science and Engineering Fair in Dallas this year, spanning from May 14th to May 19th. It was a truly remarkable experience for me to showcase my ongoing research and receive valuable feedback from experts in the field. Their insights played a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of my current project. Moreover, the fair provided an enriching platform for scientific exploration, featuring insightful sessions on patent acquisition and research publication. These sessions broadened my understanding of the scientific process and its practical applications, equipping me with invaluable knowledge for the future. What made the experience even more memorable was the chance to connect with high school students from all corners of the globe. Meeting and exchanging ideas with these passionate individuals was inspiring and eye-opening. Notably, I had the pleasure of reconnecting with a few friends I had met during last year's BioGENEius challenge. Overall, my participation in the International Science and Engineering Fair was both academically invigorating and socially fulfilling. I am eager to continue seeking out similar opportunities as I move forward.

Academy Junior, Marta Pambukhchyan, participates in a week-long celebration of her scientific achievements as a FINALIST at the 2022 Regeneron ISEF in Atlanta. Marta has been chosen for the International Science and Engineering Fair for two years in a row (her sophomore and junior year), being one of the seven students representing LA County and the only student representing the Glendale Unified School District and CVHS. For this competition, Marta had an all-paid, week-long trip to Atlanta, Georgia, where she competed against STEM students from over 75 countries!

In addition her project scored in the "upper levels" by the Special Awards in Statistics Judges from the American Statistical Association (ASA) at ISEF and was offered a year-long membership in the ASA's journals and magazines. Congratu;ations, Marta!!!

Well established as the Biotechnology Institute's "flagship" program, the BioGENEius Challenge  Series provides high school age students with expanded opportunity to compete and be recognized for outstanding research in biotechnology. Drawn from state and regional science competitions across the more than thirty State and our International partners, top finalists representing the upper 5% of applicants showcase their research at the BIO International Convention to some 16,000 attendees and a panel of judges comprised of industry and academic subject matter experts.

At the California State Science and Engineering Fair Mahesh Arunachalam was awarded 2022 National BioGENEius Award for Southern California and was picked as one of the 15 finalists to attend the International Bio Conference at SanDiego from June 13th  through the 16th.

At the conference, Mahesh participated under Global Healthcare Challenge in the medical biotechnology category and The Gene pool competition which is a spontaneous presentation using a prop that students pick blindfolded. Mahesh was selected as one of the top 3 finalist of the Gene pool competition. Mahesh picked  gloves; his impromptu speech using gloves received good response from the audience.

Congratulations to science research class students
academy junior Marta pambukchian
&
academy sophomore mahesh arunachalam

Academy Junior Marta Pambukchyan is a student in the Science Research class at CVHS  and this is her second year participating in science fairs. She placed first in her category both last year and this year at the  Regional LA County Science and Engineering Fair. This year is a continuation of her project from last year and is titled Leachate-Filtering Efficacy of Varied Landfill Liner Powders (Year 2). Last year, in the middle of the pandemic, Marta did such a thorough job with her experiment that she was selected to participate in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair which was held virtually. As a confirmation of her pursuit to excel in her work she has been selected to represent LA County at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair for the second consecutive year and she will be traveling to Atlanta next month to compete with students from around the world. Marta also received the Stockholm Junior Water Prize  which has its own  regional, state, national, and international level competitions.

Academy Sophomore Mahesh Arunachalam is another student in the Science Research class at CVHS and has been participating in science fairs since his Elementary school years. This year with his project titled Screening of Natural Metabolites in the Treatment of Receptor Tyrosine Kinase Mediated Cancers,  he placed first in his category at the Regional LA County Science and Engineering Fair this March and was also selected as an alternate to attend the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair. As the result of placing first in his category at the regional fair, Mahesh competed at the CA State Science Fair in April where he was awarded the Southern California National BioGENEius Award ($1250) and will be competing in the International BioGENEius Challenge  in June.

News from Academy Alumna Esther Lim
I'm currently working as an Epidemiologist with the California Department of Public Health since last August and have been working remotely from home. My work under the serosurveillance team has involved designing and implementing a statewide seroprevalence study, which is currently going through the second wave of data collection while simultaneously working in preparation of the third and last scheduled to launch next Spring. The second wave has been easier since most of the foundational work was completed during wave 1, but trying to navigate the logistical hurdles of the supply chain issues has been a somewhat unexpected source of headaches. Still, we're all just chugging along and we've also been able to write up the results from our first wave! I've attached a pre-print version here: CalScope: Monitoring SARS-CoV-2 Seroprevalence from Vaccination and Prior Infection in Adults and Children in California May 2021 to July 2021 | medRxiv. In all, I am very happy to be working here and also very lucky to be working with such a motivated and supportive group!
I am also preparing to apply for a DrPH program for this upcoming Fall 2023 application cycle.
