REGENERON ISEF
mAY 15-19, 2023
DALLAS, TX
I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to attend the renowned International Science and Engineering Fair in Dallas this year, spanning from May 14th to May 19th. It was a truly remarkable experience for me to showcase my ongoing research and receive valuable feedback from experts in the field. Their insights played a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of my current project. Moreover, the fair provided an enriching platform for scientific exploration, featuring insightful sessions on patent acquisition and research publication. These sessions broadened my understanding of the scientific process and its practical applications, equipping me with invaluable knowledge for the future. What made the experience even more memorable was the chance to connect with high school students from all corners of the globe. Meeting and exchanging ideas with these passionate individuals was inspiring and eye-opening. Notably, I had the pleasure of reconnecting with a few friends I had met during last year's BioGENEius challenge. Overall, my participation in the International Science and Engineering Fair was both academically invigorating and socially fulfilling. I am eager to continue seeking out similar opportunities as I move forward.

International Bio Conference
Well established as the Biotechnology Institute's "flagship" program, the BioGENEius Challenge Series provides high school age students with expanded opportunity to compete and be recognized for outstanding research in biotechnology. Drawn from state and regional science competitions across the more than thirty State and our International partners, top finalists representing the upper 5% of applicants showcase their research at the BIO International Convention to some 16,000 attendees and a panel of judges comprised of industry and academic subject matter experts.
At the California State Science and Engineering Fair Mahesh Arunachalam was awarded 2022 National BioGENEius Award for Southern California and was picked as one of the 15 finalists to attend the International Bio Conference at SanDiego from June 13th through the 16th.
At the conference, Mahesh participated under Global Healthcare Challenge in the medical biotechnology category and The Gene pool competition which is a spontaneous presentation using a prop that students pick blindfolded. Mahesh was selected as one of the top 3 finalist of the Gene pool competition. Mahesh picked gloves; his impromptu speech using gloves received good response from the audience.

Congratulations to Our Amazing Academy Students!
HOSA Bowl
Gold - Ashley Park, Megan Parada, Eric Markarian, and Kevin Dong
HOSA Bowl provides members with the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills on various topics and situations in health, HOSA, and parliamentary procedure. This competitive event consists of 2 rounds and each team consists of exactly four (4) members. Round One is a written test. Top scoring teams advance to Round Two and compete by giving appropriate responses to items presented by a moderator in a “buzzer style” round. These items may be in the form of questions, incomplete statements, and/or definitions and may be multi-answer items. Winners will be determined by a series of elimination rounds as described in the event tournament bracket. This event aims to inspire members to be proactive future health professionals and motivate them to participate in teams, while learning about health, HOSA and parliamentary procedure topics.
Research Poster
Gold - Mantra Roointan
Silver - Michelle Chung
4th place - Seon Jae Yoon
Research Poster provides HOSA members with the opportunity to think critically about a health-related issue in their community; pose a research question surrounding the chosen topic; and conduct research on that topic. All competitors will develop a Research Poster showcasing their findings.
Postsecondary / Collegiate members have an added presentation in which they must present their research to a panel of judges.

Four students from the Academy of Science and Medicine participated in the Science Bowl Competition at JPL on Saturday, January 28th, 2017. There were a total of 24 teams that competed for a chance to go to the National Science Bowl Competition.
Although our team did not advance beyond the qualifying rounds, they won the hearts of the judges. Our team received the “Sportsmanship Award" again. That is two years in a row - last year and this year. We have won this award three times since 2011 when we CVHS won the very first Sportsmanship Award. That says a lot about our students!
