On the morning of 4/25, my father was involved in a freak accident near the intersection of California State Route 2 and California State Route 5 in Los Angeles with an unlicensed and insured motorist whose vehicle's tire unexpectedly blew out on the freeway.
My father suffered life-threatening injuries from the accident, including a blunt cardiac injury, in which a chamber of his heart ruptured, and a perforated colon, requiring emergency surgery to save his life. I am eternally grateful to the good Samaritans, emergency medical personnel, and the exceptional medical team at LAC+USC Medical Center that day who operated on and provided care for my father in an extremely vulnerable, uncertain time for our family. Because of their quick-thinking actions, my father is still with us today.
After nearly two gut-wrenching weeks in the ICU and additional follow-up operations to address injuries to his heart and colon, as well as a surgery to repair a fractured ankle, my father's condition has improved enough that he has been transferred over to a more progressive unit at the hospital. While I am very grateful that he has made tremendous progress in a short span, he will need to undergo a lengthy rehabilitation process to recover from his injuries, and the long-term implications from the accident remain to be seen.
Prior to the accident, my father oversaw operations for a maintenance/cleaning services business in the Los Angeles area. During his free time, he enjoyed playing golf and recently picked up cooking as a hobby. He also loved to write, serving as the vice president for the Korean Essayist Association of America and periodically releasing his memoirs for the Korean literary community to engage with. There are still a lot of unknowns at this time, but I remain optimistic that my father can make a significant recovery and resume his daily activities.
As my father continues on his road to recovery with courage and strength, I would like the financial implications from this accident to be the least of his worries so he can focus his energy on restoring his health. Your generous donation will go towards helping my father get back on his feet by providing support for ongoing and future medical expenses from surgical operations and rehabilitation services he needs as well as lost wages from this unforeseen tragedy. Thank you in advance for your support and for keeping my father in your thoughts and prayers!
